Amherst Pet Blog: How to Fit a Dog Into Your Budget

Is owning a dog putting a strain on your budget? Rather than giving your family friend away, look into some ways that you can save money while still keeping your dog. Here is a list of tips that I would like to share with you;

  • Don’t Let Your Dog Eat You Out of House and Home

    Feeding your dog cheap food won’t necessarily be a good deal in the long run. Your dogs health is very dependent upon the food that it eats, so making sure the food you feed it is loaded with ingredients that are good for dogs is very important. You don’t have to buy the most expensive food, either, just make sure that it is low in fillers and your dog will likely eat less as it fills up faster. Raw food diets are another possibility if you can deal with the greater preparation

  • The Nightmare After Halloween

    While walking my pugs (CoCo and Olive) and my Lhasa Apso (Chilli) on Burroughs Drive in Snyder I saw several pieces of candy on the sidewalks.

    I felt it extremely important to suggest that during the the next couple of weeks after Halloween to keep an eye on your pupps as you go about your regular walks around Amherst. Dogs love chocolate, but chocolate is toxic for them. So keep your eyes peeled for Fido and Fifi to make a dive for a few of those Hershey’s mini bars dropped by careless trick-or-treating children along the sidewalks.

    Pet Connection Needs Your Support!

    Tickets are now available for a Holiday Concert/Dinner Dance featuring Jack Civiletto & The Pyramid Band that will take place from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, December 4, at the Hearthstone Manor, 333 Dick Road, Depew. Proceeds from the event will benefit Pet Connection Programs Inc., a special care shelter for dogs and cats located in Marilla. Please purchase a ticket and help us keep our doors open to future animal rescues!

    Helping Puppy Mill Dogs

    This weekend, Love Your Dog accepted dozens of dogs that had been rescued from a shut-down puppy mill in Missouri. The staff volunteered to groom and bathe the dogs before they go into foster homes.

    After hours of waiting, the truck that so many of us were anticipating had arrived! Everyone scattered, we welcomed them with applause, then anxiously gathered around for the doors to open. There was silence. Then a few comments: "Hi guys," "Welcome."  And as I looked around through my own tears I saw that no one had a dry eye. As we were handed a dog to unload, all I can remember is tightly holding the little Yorkie I had been handed and telling him "Its going to be ok now, you are safe." He as many,  were frozen in fear, they didn't know what was happening to them. But we all knew they would now have a chance to experience a real life.
