The Western New York Land Conservancy, Friends of Reinstein Woods and the Buffalo Audubon Society are pleased to announce the winners of the fifth annual Garlic Mustard Challenge, a competition designed to improve habitats in three Western New York nature preserves.

Sometimes, a terrible situation can bring out the absolute best in people.

When word got out that two iPads were recently stolen from Dog Ears Bookstore & Café in South Buffalo after someone broke into the nonprofit community bookstore after business hours, many individuals from South Buffalo and beyond stepped up with donations and offers of support. One such individual was Garret Cleversley, CEO of MacSolutions Plus, an Apple-authorized retail store and service center located in the Eastern Hills Mall.

Now that prom season is in full swing and summer break is nearing, more teens will be on the road. With Memorial Day marking the beginning of AAA’s 100 deadliest days of the year for U.S. teen drivers, schools across the country are re-enforcing lessons in driver safety. To help safeguard local youth drivers AT&T teamed up with North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur Pappas, North Tonawanda Police Department Captain Roger Zgolak, and North Tonawanda High School to educate students on the dangers of texting and driving. The special assembly was part of the school’s pre-prom assembly.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of its Foster Grandparent Program in conjunction with Senior Corps Week May 18-23, Catholic Charities will thank its 96 Foster Grandparent Program volunteers during its “50 and Feeling Fabulous” event May 22 at the Lt. Col. Matt Urban Human Services Center of WNY, 1081 Broadway, Buffalo.  

Senior Corps Week, developed by the Corporation for National and Community Service, spotlights the impact of Senior Corps volunteers on their communities. Catholic Charities Foster Grandparent Program is a program of Service Corps, which is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Stella Niagara Preserve Receives $35,000 From Local Foundations

 

The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo has just approved a grant in the amount of $25,000 for the Western New York Land Conservancy for the creation of the Stella Niagara Preserve, a new, publicly-accessible nature preserve along the Niagara River in Lewiston. This news comes just days after the announcement that the M&T Charitable Foundation will contribute $10,000 toward the project! The Land Conservancy has now received more than $2.9 million of the more than $3.2 million needed to create the Stella Niagara Preserve.
