Gold Laced Coat event at Old Fort Niagara

Gold Laced Coat event at Old Fort Niagara

The Friends of the Youngstown Free Library and Old Fort Niagara are collaborating on an exciting new series of programs for children, ages 8 to 12, and their families who are interested in learning about the history of our region. The four-part series will bring to life four characters from “The Gold-Laced Coat,” by Helen Fuller Orton, a classic 1934 novel for children that tells the story of young people at Fort Niagara during the French and Indian War. Each program will include an activity and craft related to the featured character. Each participating child will also receive a copy of “The Gold-Laced Coat.”

On Wednesday evenings, March 30 and April 6, 13 and 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Old Fort Niagara’s staff of talented storytellers and re-enactors will create living history in the Red Brick Gym, located at 240 Lockport Street (Rt. 93) in Youngstown.

Cooking Event at Wegmans on Sheridan Dr. "Stir Fry-Wok This Way" on 3/31

Cooking Event at Wegmans on Sheridan Dr. "Stir Fry-Wok This Way" on 3/31

Mastering the Basics--Stir Fry: Wok This Way with Chef Jeff Lunney

We’ll begin with a chef demonstration of preparing ingredients and our stir-fry technique, and you’ll get to sample Pad Thai Shrimp Bowl with Peanuts. The class will break into teams of two or three to work on their dishes. Each half of the class prepares one recipe that’s enough for everyone in the class. That way you’ll enjoy everything made, as well as a wine sampling to complement your meal.  Class prepared menus include Spicy Orange Pork Stir Fry, Lemon Grass Beef Stir Fry, and chef-prepared rice.

Want to master the basics of other cooking techniques? We have a series of 3! Mastering the Basics makes a great holiday gift for kitchen newbies, newlywed couples or budding food enthusiasts.
