Three Free Health-Related Programs Target Caregivers, Wellness and Chronic Disease Management

Three, free six-week health-related programs focusing on caregiving, wellness and chronic disease management will be offered by Catholic Charities Older Adult Services starting in October at its 128 Wilson St., Buffalo site.

Caregivers, seniors and other adults who attend the evidence-based programs will discover tools to handle stress, reduce guilt or anger and depression, how to actively manage a chronic condition and live a healthy lifestyle.

“Evidence-based programs are based on research” and “translate tested program models or interventions into practical, effective community programs that can provide proven health benefits to participants,” according to the National Council on Aging.

The three programs, which will include refreshments and giveaways, are:

• Powerful Tools for Caregivers, to be held Wednesdays from 1:30-4:30 p.m., begins Oct. 8. The class provides strategies to tackle stress, reduce guilt, anger and depression, make tough decisions, as well as communicate feelings effectively as caregivers. Participants will also learn to balance time between their personal lives and caregiving, set goals and solve problems.
• Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE), to be held Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., starts Oct. 16.  WISE covers risk factors and behaviors that should be avoided in order to stay healthy, the different effects alcohol, prescription and over-the-counter medications have on seniors, and offers tips to enable them to feel more empowered about their health and the health care they receive. Healthy aging and celebrating the benefits that come with it also will be discussed.

• Chronic Disease Self-Management, to be held Mondays from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., begins Oct. 20.  “Approximately 92 percent of older adults have at least one chronic disease, and 77 percent have at least two,” according to the National Aging Council. Chronic diseases include diabetes, arthritis, hypertension, cancer and heart disease. Participants will learn new tools to actively manage their condition.

“Catholic Charities emphasizes good health among its clients and these six-week, evidence-based programs are proven to work,” said Tara Pace, clinical coordinator, Catholic Charities Older Adult Services Department. “Older adults and their support network will gain extra tools to empower them so that both can increase their knowledge and lead independent and healthy lives.”
