National Education Blogger Says Bullying Initiatives Won't Work

National Education Blogger Says Bullying Initiatives Won't Work

Christopher Emdin of The Huffington Post took a controversial stance in his blog yesterday, explaining what he believes are the 5 Major Reasons that the latest anti-bullying efforts won't work.

His reasons are as follows:

  • The Zero-Tolerance Theory Backfires
  • Avoiding Social Media Is NOT A Solution
  • We Address Bullying with Celebrity, Not Expertise
  • We Forget that the Bullied And The Bully Are Both Children
  • We Turn A Blind Eye To Adult Bullying

Edmin cites the deaths of Williamsville teen Jamey Rodemeyer and Rutgers student Tyler Clementi as the main catalysts for the new push to resolve the bullying issue.

Tobacco: Why all the Fuss?

Tobacco has been in the news for a few months now, with the FDA releasing its new cigarette labels to big tobacco suing the FDA. Many people have seen the commercials and know that tobacco kills but choose to smoke anyways, so why all the fuss?

Many people have a hard time believing that tobacco is an addictive drug similar to cocaine or heroin. However nicotine, which is the addictive ingredient in tobacco, is one of the most widely abused drugs in the US. In a report from the US Department of Health it states:

Not a total washout, Dunkin Donuts received about 30% of the votes in every category.

Teens & self-esteem: Your teen’s self-esteem dependent on you

Teens & self-esteem: Your teen’s self-esteem dependent on you

So what is self-esteem, more importantly low self-esteem? Low self-esteem is a distorted view of self that affects many beliefs and assumptions that one has about oneself. Low self-esteem generally forms in childhood and is usually fully set by age 8 to 10.

In 2008 Dove (yes the soap) released Real Girls, Real Pressure: A National Report on the State of Self-Esteem. The Dove Self-Esteem Fund commissioned the report and learned that there was at the time and may still be a self-esteem crisis in the country. This crisis affects every aspect of a young girl’s life such as looks, performance, and relationships.
