Amherst Chamber of Commerce Issues Statement on Outer Harbor Control

At their May Business Meeting, the Amherst Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors approved the following position and statement regarding the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation’s proposed takeover of the Outer Harbor:

The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) has been extraordinarily effective in its focus on projects and programming along Buffalo’s Inner Harbor. ECHDC currently owns outer harbor parcels which combine to create 21 acres of paved trails, natural landscaping, comfort stations, parking areas, access roads and shoreline stabilizations. A singular focus on waterfront development is required for this initiative to reach its full potential and, for that reason the Amherst Chamber of Commerce fully supports the ECHDC takeover of the outer harbor from the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. ECHDA is the logical destination for this transfer as it is the state sanctioned agency whose sole strategic focus is the development of Buffalo’s waterfront.

The Amherst Chamber of Commerce, representing over 2,500 businesses from 78 zip codes throughout the Buffalo Niagara Region recognizes that the Buffalo waterfront is a key component of our region’s sustainability. As we work together to attract investment in our region and expand industry clusters and our economic base, the waterfront becomes even more critical to our strategy. Combining commercial development, tourism attractions and leisure destinations for our local residents will result in a multi-use regional jewel. The time is now right for the NFTA to pass the baton!
